Cricket team
THE national senior men's cricket side to compete in 2013 events will be announced today. A statement from Cricket Fiji said the national coach and the official apparel wear would also be revealed. "The Fiji National team will be competing in their first international tournament in 2013," said the statement. "The East Asia Pacific T20 tournament will be held in Auckland, New Zealand on February 3.
This tournament is a qualifier for the 2014 T20 Cricket World Cup," it said.
USP volleyball
THE University of the South Pacific Islanders Volleyball Association will hold an open trial tomorrow to select teams for the upcoming Vulaca Championships. Association secretary Mereaia Belo said the women's trials would be from 5 to 6pm followed by the men' from 7 to 9pm. Players should be at Vodafone Arena before 5pm.
Pacific Nations
FORMER national soccer rep Gajen Naidu will help the Lautoka soccer side during the Pacific Nations Cup that starts in New Zealand today. Naidu, who is also a former Lautoka rep, resides in New Zealand and has recruited four players including his son Trishal Naidu to play for the Blues in the inaugural tournament. Lautoka Football Association secretary Reginald Goundar confirmed to Times Sport the four would feature for Lautoka in the tournament.
He said Lautoka FA was thankful to Naidu for his kind gesture.
Lautoka is drawn in Pool A with Ba, AFSA of Australia, Nadi NZ and Kiwi Enterprise Labasa.
Kunavore burial
FORMER Flying Fijian and Toulouse rugby rep Maleli Kunavore will be laid to rest at his village in Nadroga on Friday. The 29-year-old passed away last week at his home in Suva. Kunavore made his debut for Fiji in 2005 against Samoa before he left for top French club Toulouse. Kunavore was a product of the Nadi Muslim Rugby Academy.
The ginger haired outside centre was part of the Flying Fijians team that reached the quarter-finals of the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
