Teacher for World Cup

Zanzeer Singh
Tuesday, November 20, 2012

SIGATOKA schoolteacher Ravinesh Kumar is set to officiate in the 2012 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan after passing his fitness test in Zurich, Switzerland last Wednesday.

Kumar was one of the four assistant referees from Oceania Football Confederation who participated in the test.

In July he became the first soccer referee from the country to officiate at the Olympics in London.

Fiji Football Referees Association president Mahendra Singh said Kumar had maintained consistency.

Singh said Kumar always put in a lot of hard work in refereeing.

"Ravinesh passed his fitness test in temperatures as low as five degrees," Singh said.

"He is now guaranteed a position on the match official's panel for the FIFA Club World Cup. Ravinesh is certainly making most of the opportunities. For the local referees the pathway to the international competitions is there. They can get to the top through hard work and dedication."

The FIFA Club World Cup will be held from December 6-16. Spanish club Barcelona is the defending champion.
