THE national men's bowls side left the country yesterday to participate in the World Bowls Championship in Australia.

The tournament will be played from November 24 to December 9 in Adelaide. Team manager Curtis Mar said they were leaving early to get a feel of the greens at the competition venue.

"These nine days will be used to get acclimatised to the greens because the greens there are quicker compared to the one here (Suva Bowling Club)," he said.

Fiji finished second in the triples event, eighth in the pairs, ninth in the singles and 12th in the fours during the world championship.

Expectations are high on the national side to repeat or better that result with the team ranked second in the world triples competition and number one in the Asia Pacific.

Meanwhile, the bowlers presented their itatau (traditional farewell) to the President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau at the Government House on Wednesday.

A statement from the Ministry of Information said Ratu Epeli shared a few words of support for the team before they departed Fiji.

The women's side will fly out on November 20.
