All Whites score draw

AUCKLAND - Coach Ricki Herbert has come away happy with the ability of a new-look New Zealand line-up to secure a 1-1 draw away to China in a friendly soccer international.

But he and skipper Tommy Smith also believe the New Zealanders created enough chances to win the match in Shanghai on Thursday (Fiji time).

Millwall striker Chris Wood equalised late in the first half after defender Zhao Peng had given China a 32-minute lead.

"We had a number of our senior players not here, so it was a huge challenge for the young boys that stepped out," Herbert said. "At the end of the day, on chances, we probably should have won it."

Among those missing was regular skipper Ryan Nelsen, who withdrew from the match because of niggling ankle and knee injuries.
