TWO men who pleaded guilty to stealing assorted items worth more than $18,000 at the height of the March floods were yesterday handed prison sentences by the High Court in Lautoka.

Solomoni Roqara and Alivereti Driu were sentenced to nine and six months behind bars respectively by High Court judge Justice Sitambarampillai Thurairaja.

Roqara and Driu pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and theft after stealing $18,027 worth of items from Ken's Shopping Mart at Nakavu, Nadi, on March 29. According to court files, the accused stole assorted liquor worth $4157, cigarette worth $6348, recharge cards worth $5462, groceries worth $260 and $1800 in cash. The court heard that police recovered $42.10.

In sentencing the duo, Justice Thurairaja said their actions caused the business community to feel insecure.
