Players fail to turn up

THE Fiji National Rugby League is urging players named in the Fiji Residents squad to attend daily training every week.

Thirty players were requested to report at the FNRL headquarters for daily training in preparation for the friendly match against the Newcastle Knights next February.

However, only 18 players responded to the call at training this week.

And FNRL development officer Sale Tubuna said all players needed to attend the training.

He said the preparation for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup had started and players needed to make themselves available if they wanted a spot in the national team.

"We are urging those players named in the squad to attend the daily training. Our preparation for the RLWC and the friendly game against the Knights starts now," Tubuna said.

"Players need to condition their bodies so attending daily training is very important since we will be working stage by stage as we build up to the world cup."

While players are slowly getting back in par with the required fitness level, Tubuna said most players had shown improvements in the past few days.

"We are working on the base, strength and fitness of players, most of these players took time off after the league season so now they are slowly getting back into shape.

"Maybe in the next two or three weeks, we will be able to gauge which step to take next as we proceed further with our training," Tubuna said.

Meanwhile Penrith Panthers-bound Sakeo Raloa has been closely monitored, Tubuna says.
