WITH technology providing the basis for chip production, information and communication systems, and computer systems, Fiji is doing exactly the same with the business sector.

This after the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) held a free website training workshop on Monday night, attended by a group of people ranging from small business owners to individuals looking to develop their ICT skills.

Organisers of the three-hour workshop — Sydney-based PB Web Development — said it was a huge success with participants leaving the event with a new set of skills, and having completed a basic website that they created that would be hosted by the trainers for free and new set of skills.

The website training session was part of a larger project under the EDF10 — an initiative that was extended to the public. PB Web Development is working at revamping the SPTO website as part of the European Union-funded Pacific Regional Training Capacity Building Program.

Sangeeta Maharaj, owner of Vale ni Tadra Homestay said a lot of small businesses and many in the tourism sector could benefit from initiatives such as this.

Company director Peter Bui said they were hoping to create a buzzing and self-sustained local community here in Fiji, based around using the Joomla CMS.
