THE Fiji Chess Federation is gearing up to host what they describe is the 'most unpredictable' chess tournament of the year.

The three-player Chess Team's Open Championship will be held this Sunday at the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee's Olympic House in Suva.

A statement from the federation said FCF president Dr Virgilio de Asa had issued an open challenge to all chess players in Fiji.

"In terms of competition, this is one of the most unpredictable tournaments of the year since a team can be formed by a random combination of any three players," said the statement. "This is an open invitation to all chess players in Fiji."

"Even those who do not have a team of three are welcome, since there are a range of wildcard players like Gloria Sukhu, Hilda Vukikomoala, Christopher Kumar, Noel Adricula, Goru Arvind, June Clomera and Rajiv Raj in the waiting list to challenge veteran teams that include CM Manoj Kumar, CM Calvin Prasad and Dr Neel Arora," he said.

The statement has also challenged primary and secondary school's along with tertiary institutions to send a minimum of one chess team to battle it out in the final open tournament of the year.

The tournament is sponsored by former national champion Roneel Sharma.
