Pay up or serve 80 days in jail

A MAN has been given two months to pay a fine of $800 or spend 80 days in prison.

Sakiasi Babakobau, who was charged with one count of dangerous driving and one count of driving a motor vehicle while there is present in the blood a concentration of alcohol in excess of the prescribed limit, was lucky to escape a jail term yesterday.

He appeared before magistrate Chaitanya Lakshman in the Suva Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on September 9, Babakobau drove a vehicle with the registration number DHO84 on Edinburgh Drive in a manner which was dangerous to the public.

Babakobau asked the court for forgiveness for his actions. He was also disqualified from driving for one year and his fine will be reviewed on December 21.
