DEFENDING champions Davetalevu strolled into the quarter-finals of the Borneo International Club Sevens in style with an impressive opening day performance in Sandakan, Sabah on Saturday.

The Fijian side ended the group stage unbeaten after registering three comfortable wins in their group matches.

Davetalevu began their title defence with an impressive 70-0 win over Tawau Panthers followed by a 19-0 win against Agong's Cup bound Sabah Eagles.

They concluded their challenge by defeating Massey RC of New Zealand 17-0.

Team manager Paula Biu said he was delighted with their opening day showing but stressed that his side still have work to do if they are to successfully defend their title.

The team will play Bandaraya Dragons in the quarter-finals today.

"We are still very far from the final. We cannot afford to be overconfident and must take things one game at a time," said Biu.

Host team Borneo Eagles also moved into the knockout stages unbeaten. The Eagles defeated an all-Fijian Bandaraya Dragons (DBKL) 28-12 in their opening match before thrashing Palmyra of Australia 52-0.

The Eagles had Samoan stars Uale Mai and Fa'atonu Fili.
