A TOTAL of 32 young swimmers were hosted to a special awards night by the Race Club Fiji for helping the club finish second in the Short Course National Swimming Competition last month.

This was the first time the club held an awards night and club manager Joan Nasario said it was the first time some young ones had ever taken part in a competition.

"We took 34 swimmers to the competition, the youngest being seven and the oldest was 16 years old," she said.

"We decided to have an awards night for them and because of time constraints they never had a proper medal presentation so we and the parents decided that it would be fitting if we hosted them for an event like this."

The club won 72 gold medals, 82 silvers and 55 bronze at the meet in Nadi.

"The boys won 41 gold, 35 silver and 22 bronze while the girls won 31 gold, 27 silver and 33 bronze.

"It is good to see these children getting the recognition and appreciation they deserve for their hard work in the swimming pool.

"They have promised to compete regularly so they can do even better next year and help the club win the competition," Nasario said.
