Decline in under-5 deaths

THE deaths of seven infants this month in Fiji has baffled many.

However, the Ministry of Health says its surveillance on infectious diseases does not indicate any increase of communicable disease of concern apart from the common flu.

A statement from the Fiji Police Force last week stated that they were concerned because the reports showed a worrying trend where the infants were sick at home and later died when they were taken to hospital for treatment.

Permanent secretary for Health Dr Eloni Tora said the surveillance reports suggested decreases in all the communicable diseases of concern like dengue at this time of the year.

"There has generally been a declining trend in the under-five mortality in Fiji over the past 50 years," he said.
