Cyclone preparedness

COMMISSIONER Western Commander Joeli Cawaki has urged residents and agencies in the Western Division to start preparing for the cyclone season.

He said it was important that groups like provincial councils took steps to ensure people were prepared, especially after the warning from the weather office that two tropical cyclones (TCs)would pass through the Fiji Group during the November to April cyclone season.

"We are approaching the cyclone season and people need to be prepared," he said.

"People and the councils need to take action before it is too late."

Fiji Meteorological Service's Alipate Waqaicelua said last week that apart from the TCs that were expected to directly affect the country, seven to 10 TCs were also expected to occur within the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres and Nadi's tropical cyclone centre area of responsibility.

"The people were not prepared either from negligence or other means but we are now telling them that approaching the cyclone period, you need to be prepared," Mr Waqaicelua said.

In another development, Commander Cawaki said they were allocated $1.5million for the development of Ba Province.
