Humble Vukona

MIKA Vukona has reacted with typical humility to news that he has been named the Australian NBL Championship Player of the Week for his 15 rebound 15 point double-double in the Breakers one point win over the Crocs last Friday night.

"This is a surprise and something I am honoured to receive but one I will accept on behalf of my team.

"None of us can do anything without the support of our team mates, whether it is setting a screen, boxing out so someone else can grab a rebound or successfully running a play for someone to finish.

"We don't play for these sorts of accolades, for us it is all about improving each week, focusing on the next game and contributing to a good team performance to get a win."

The Fijian-born star scored 15 points and amassed 15 rebounds, as well as adding three assists and three steals.

He made 6-of-11 field goal attempts, shooting at an accurate 55per cent.

The 198cm athletic forward fired his team up early in the game with some strong words in a team time-out and then led by example, making two key defensive plays down the stretch to seal the narrow win.

"My numbers might have been good but everyone contributed to that win on Friday, whether it was Daryls 3 point shooting, Dillons energy, Chiefs blocks, CJ firing us up when we needed it before halftime or Cedrics lay-up to give us the lead, everyone contributes in some way."

Vukona received praise from both his own coach and the opposition after a typically high energy performance that also included 3 assists and 3 steals and no turnovers.
