THE $8.7million Lagilagi Housing Project in Suva's Jittu Estate funded by the government and the German Catholic Agency, Misereor, has started.

Confirming this to The Fiji Times, Semiti Qalowasa of the People's Community Network Fiji said the first phase of the development would finish by next March and would feature 65 families receiving proper housing.

"The actual work on the project started in July following the signing of a contract with Fortech Construction Limited," he said.

PCN consultant and project co-ordinator Fr Kevin Barr said the government, through the Housing Ministry, gave $1.4m while $1.3m was allocated by Misereor to kick-start the first phase.

"We are still looking for funding to reach the $8.7m mark so that the whole project can be completed," Fr Barr said.
