THE future of Makalati Reef in Dawasamu looks much brighter after the Australian High Commission installed an anchor free mooring on it this past month.
The Australian High Commission's Direct Aid Program (DAP) gave a grant of close to $20,000 for the mooring and a separate sanitation project at Nailega Village in Wainibuka.
The anchor-free mooring enables boat owners to stop and secure their vessels without the need to drop an anchor on the reef.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, Australian High Commission representative Fiona McEwan said they were delighted to assist with the project.
She said trends around the world showed anchor-free moorings to be instrumental in limiting damage to coral and helped preserve a quality marine habitat.
