THE Suva City Council is offering defaulting ratepayers a 100 per cent discount on interest upon full payment of their arears.
This was announced by SCC special administrator Chandu Umaria at a press conference yesterday.
Mr Umaria said the 100 per cent discount was an incentive for rate defaulters to settle their arrears.
"If ratepayers clear their payments on time the council will be in a position to provide better services to the people of Suva," he said.
Mr Umaria revealed that $15million was owed by defaulting ratepayers.
"We have collected 92 per cent of the rates this year which is close to $40m," he said.
Mr Umaria said legal action action would be taken against those who fail to pay their rates.
"Ratepayers owing less than $5000 and who failed to clear their payments can be taken to the Small Claims Tribunal," he said.
He said those who owed the council more than $5000 could have their properties sold to recover the cost with the approval of the courts.
The 100 per cent discount initiative ends on December 31.
