Sports News in Brief

Not forgotten

FORMER national rep Zikar Ali's visit to his hometown Ba over the weekend caused quite a stir in the soccer crazy town. Ali is a former Ba rep and had helped his district to numerous victories in his playing days from 1958 to 1963. A shop owner in Ba, Mahendra Bilimoria called up Times Sport in Suva just to say Ali was spotted in Ba. Seems like the stars of yesteryear may have grown old but are not forgotten.

Fun run

THE Jet Runners Club in association with International Secondary School Nadi will organise a five-kilometre fun run on November 10. The Nadi-based club has been successful in their four fun runs this year and are looking at ending the year on a good note. "Also we want to form a Nadi Athletics Association," said club president Abinesh Kumar. "We will see the interest of the people on this during the fun run and then we will decide on forming a committee for it," he said.

FORMER national rep Ruci Kaiwai has been appointed the Women's Cricket Co-ordinator by Cricket Fiji. The announcement was made by Cricket Fiji chief executive officer Sonny Henderson yesterday and he said further details of the full-time position would be revealed later. "She (Kaiwai) will be in charge of women's cricket from kindergarten to the senior teams," Henderson said. "We are also looking at ways to get women into scorekeeping and umpiring," he said.

THE DHL Raiwaqa rugby club will open the doors to its new clubhouse this week. The new clubhouse, constructed just beside the site of the old clubhouse in Raiwaqa, would be handed over to the officials of the Raiwaqa rugby club in a special ceremony on Friday. An invitation has been sent out to all former players that have played for the club to make an effort to attend the handover.
