A 19-YEAR-old man has been jailed for two years and 11 months by the Rakiraki Magistrates Court for assault and attempted rape.
The man was convicted by Magistrate Samuela Qica for breaking into the home of a 30-year-old woman and trying to rape her on the evening of May 21.
While sentencing the man, Mr Qica said his actions were reckless and a total disregard for a person's property.
According to the court, the man had entered the home of the victim at about 7pm while she was at home alone.
He then grabbed the woman's neck and covered her mouth with his hands. He then threatened to kill her when she tried to scream.
He was interrupted when the woman's husband arrived home.
The man had previous convictions.
