PROFILING of dalo farms on Taveuni has started in an attempt to cut out crop theft.

The initiative, endorsed by the police, comes in the wake of the increasing number of dalo thefts reported on the island so far this year.

"The profiling system started on Thursday and the activity will feature documentation of the number of farmers and the status of their farms," police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said.

"We are concerned about the increasing number of theft and it's only proper we utilise all necessary avenues in our bid to control the illegal activity,"said Ms Naisoro.

This month alone, Ms Naisoro said about 40 cases of dalo theft were reported on the island and they managed to solve at least 20.

"When reports of such cases are brought to our attention, it's easier for us to identify the suspects because we will refer to the records we have.

"Also, the information from the public will assist us, for instance, they can inform us about a person who is new to the area and is selling dalo frequently.

"This can help us track down the suspect easily," said Ms Naisoro.
