SAINT Agnes Primary School took an early lead in the inaugural Suva Unified Primary Schools athletics meet at the Suva Grammar grounds yesterday.

The school won majority of gold in the three events — 1500 metres run, long jump and shot put — held yesterday.

The remaining events will be held today as the tussle among the 12 Central primary schools intensifies.

Event co-ordinator Vereti Sauwaqa said about 800 athletes would be part of the two-day meet.

He said they would select 120 athletes to represent Suva at the annual Chow Games.

"The level of competition was very tough (yesterday) and despite the weather we managed to witness some good performances," Sauwaqa said.

"Other schools would join the meet tomorrow (today) which will make the competition tougher and exciting."
