EIGHTEEN participants have completed a Sustainable Bamboo Development training workshop at the Department of Forestry in Nasinu.

The participants now hold qualifications in bamboo artwork and creative designs under the bamboo development porgram. They were awarded certificates by Commissioner Central Lieutenant Colonel Laisenia Tuitubou.

Bamboo development consultant Sukulu Soko said it was a great opportunity for people to learn the basics about bamboo, particularly the types of bamboo in Fiji. Mr Soko said the participants not only learned to work with bamboo through art but also learned to better understand what bamboo can be used for and what sort of bamboo is needed when creating a particular furniture or artwork.

"We now have established an association called the Bamboo Network Association which will look at addressing issues concerning bamboo and enlighten individuals on how important bamboo is within the economy," he said.

Participant Kesa Tabua said she learnt a lot.

from the workshop and hopes to develop her skills and that the one-week workshop had strengthened her character.
