Keep up momentum

FORMER Fiji 7s coach Peni Veidreyaki says the Digicel national 7s team needs to maintain the momentum in their bid to win the 2012/2013 HSBC Sevens World Series.

Veidreyaki's comments come after the Timoci Wainiqolo-coached side successfully defended the Gold Coast 7s in Australia on Sunday.

He said the focus should now turn to the Dubai 7s next month.

"We made a good start last year by winning the Gold Coast 7s," Veidreyaki said.

"But then we were not able to build on that failing to win in Dubai and South Africa. The job for the coaches will be to keep the core of the players together.

"This team may have some young players but they have good understanding of each other. The defensive approach taken by the team was impressive from the quarter-final onwards. I think the loss to Australia in the pool stages was a wake-up call.

"The man on man defence was perfect. They were sticking to the ball carriers and shutting them down. This team has speedsters who are quick off the mark. The platform has been set and now we just need to build on the momentum."

The national side will arrive from Australia at 5.30am today.
