Right to vote

Nasik Swami
Tuesday, October 16, 2012

The Fiji Women's Crisis Centre believes it is important that Fiji's new constitution recognises the right to vote.

In her constitutional submissions, FWCC director Shamima Ali said while the 1997 constitution provided the right to register as a voter, there was no explicit right to vote.

"Given the lack of respect for democratic processes in Fiji in the past 25 years, the recognition of the right to vote should contribute towards reinforcing respect for democratic processes," Ms Ali said.

She said that the right of access to justice for all persons was a fundamental right to enforce compliance with the provisions of the constitution, including the Bill of Rights.
