FIJI formalised diplomatic relations with the Republic of Ghana at a ceremony at the Ghanaian Mission to the United Nations (UN) in New York on Friday.
The country's permanent representative to the UN Peter Thompson and his Ghanaian counterpart Ken Kanda signed a joint communique to establish the tie between the two developing nations.
In a government statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, it stated the desire of the communique — to promote mutual understanding and strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation among their two people.
"The communiqué affirms the relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and other norms of international law, particularly those pertaining to the promotion of international peace and security, the respect for State sovereignty, equality among States, independence, territorial integrity, international treaties and non-interference in the internal affairs of States," the government statement said.
