THE Fiji Police Force has begun an exercise to reduce the number of road fatalities along the Sigatoka to Ba corridor.
In a statement, Police director of traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra confirmed that Operation Blitz was underway as part of the force's effort to prevent people from dying on national roads.
"Fiji recorded its highest road death toll for 2011 during the month of October of 10 road deaths. As of today the national road death toll currently stands at 34 compared to 36 for the same period last year," he said.
The operation began on Thursday with officers patrolling the Kings Highway to weed out traffic offenders and raise awareness while preventing further loss of lives.
The officers will add on to the operational manpower of officers in the Western Division as they keep tabs on criminal elements.
