Something about Arti

Arti Singh is as outrageous in personality as her nails. Fingernails that is.

One particular week recently, she was sporting a Newcastle United design.

"Newcastle United soccer team! I'm crazy about them!" the bubbly 28-year-old enthused, spreading out her perfectly painted fingernails to show off the famous black and white striped designs.

Arti has developed a special bond with fingernail art. And the fact that she works as a salesgirl at a cosmetics and accessories shop in the heart of Suva city brings out the best in her hobby.

Arti's fingernails catch the attention of customers and passers-by. She's happy to keep changing the designs on them for everyone's viewing pleasure.

Arti is a customer's best friend when it comes selecting nail polish, nail accessories and the like.

She knows what colours would suit your skin colouring, to wear to certain events and what designs would look great on you. She even knows where you can get fake fingernails at bargain prices, and which type of glue will ensure they really stick, and last!

"I've tried all the colours here," she proudly says, sifting through the various shades of pinks, and reds, oranges, blues, greens and silver on the cosmetics rack at the store.

Arti says well polished fingernails are a must for any fashion conscious lady.

According to her, they create an impression of the wearer.

Tall, slim with straight, long black hair, Arti could easily pass for a model, but she'd rather not.

The friendly Suva girl prefers to learn about, and create eye-catching nail designs for herself and others.

And she cannot be fooled with Constance Carroll products. She can tell a fake from a genuine just by looking at the packaging, even if they seem identical to the customer.

With her special qualities in cosmetics and wild creativity, Arti is a budding fingernail artist in her own right.

Arti even joined a nail design competition on Facebook where people posted pictures of some of their crazy, cool, funky, wacko creations on fingernails.

Arti says she takes her hat off to the girl who posted pictures of the Spongebob Squarepants character expertly painted on each fingernail.

"She used a fine paintbrush. The background was yellow, then she used blue colours and other colours to paint his features, even pants - on every nail!"

"Mine was like.. "Funky Arti" written on each nail - I used clear nail polish, for the tips, I used black, white and gold colours. It was very simple, but it was my own design," she said.

Apparently, Arti's flair for nail design started early.

"Eversince I was young, I always had this thing for cosmetics and nails. I haven't done any courses, no. But I paint for friends and customers," she says.

Arti may not realise this, but in her own, outrageous way, she has inspired many young ladies and women to care for their nails better and make them an added feature of attraction.
