THE longest stage of the Tour of Fiji cycling competition from Pacific Harbour to Lautoka had an exciting finish yesterday.
US cyclist Brian Hennessey crossed the finish line milliseconds before stage one winner Mike Loeser to clinch the stage two race.
Race director and Cycling Fiji president Dom Sansom said the almost 180-kilometre race was so close that both cyclists were awarded the same time.
He said only four competitors contested in the race.
"It was very hot. We had to shorten the race to prevent the riders from dehydrating so the race finished at Sabeto, outside Nadi, instead of Lautoka."
Sansom said Loeser and Hennessey broke away just before Natadola and continued to increase the gap on Christian Carling and Jonathan Bower.
"Despite not winning stage two, Mike Loeser retains the leader's Yellow Jersey," Sansom added.
