FIJI Day celebrations commenced on the Gold Coast, Queensland on Wednesday with more planned for the coming weeks in Fijian communities around Australia.

A government statement said the Fiji High Commission attended the Gold Coast celebrations which drew around 300 former Fiji residents and friends of Fiji.

The celebration served to formally welcome the Fiji Sevens team ahead of this weekend's IRB Gold Coast Sevens Tournament.

In thanking the Gold Coast Fiji community for their diligence in honouring Fiji Day, acting Head of Mission Cheryl Brown-Irava reiterated the Prime Minister's message of reflection on what each Fijian could do to help build a better Fiji for all.

With some 65,000 Fijians living in Australia, the high commission will be further represented at upcoming Fiji Day celebrations in Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne and South Australia over the next few weekends and will take the opportunity to brief Fiji communities on the progress of constitutional and electoral reforms and provide consular assistance.
