THE fight against HIV and AIDS in Fiji is still a major challenge.
This was highlighted by the 2012 Pacific Regional MDGs Tracking Report which provided an update on the progress of each Pacific Island country's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The report said Fiji detected its first HIV/AIDS case in 1989 and until 2011, the cumulative HIV/AIDS reported cases was 420, of which 28 had died.
It showed Fiji's reported new cases of 54 in 2011 contributed to the challenges of meeting its MDG 6 target. The study showed Fiji decreased its TB cases and had no malaria cases.
