LABASA businessman Charan Jeath Singh has suggested to the Constitution Commission that the Speaker and deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives ought to be elected from within the Parliament.

"There should be provisions in the Constitution to allow members of Parliament to be free to change political allegiance and defect from the party's of their original candidature," Mr Singh said.

"A member of the house should have the freedom to vote on issues and be independent if he or she wishes to be. This should not be the cause of a member being expelled from his or her party hence and losing his seat in Parliament.

"All members of the Cabinet should be from within the list of 50 members of Parliament and no appointments should be made from outside the house."
