ON behalf of the people of the United States of America, President Barack Obama has extended his sincere congratulations to the people of Fiji on the commemoration of the country's 42nd anniversary of Independence.
In his message, Mr Obama said Fiji and the US shared a mutual commitment to peace, freedom, the rule of law, democratic principles and respect among nations.
"The close ties between our people are a product of our shared commitment to these core values," he said.
Mr Obama said the American people continued to support the people of Fiji in their quest to draft a new constitution and return to democracy.
"I am confident that the close relationship between our nations will strengthen as the people of Fiji work to build a more free and prosperous future."
