AFTER three years of sitting wrecked and untouched in the heart of Labasa Town, demolition work to the burnt Morris Hedstrom building has finally started.
Totally destroyed by fire in February 2009 with damages amounting to about $1 million, the rusted roofing structure of the colonial-styled building was torn down on Friday afternoon.
Carpenters Fiji Ltd managing director Daniel Whippy confirmed that the building would be demolished this year.
However, he could not elaborate on details and plans of a new MH for Labasa.
"The building is just being demolished and plans to re-build are still on the drawing board," Mr Whippy said.
Last year, he confirmed to The Fiji Times that a new MH building would be constructed at the site.
Labasa businesses have welcomed the move.
Businessman Paul Jaduram said the fact that the site was being cleared was good news.
