HELEN Elliot defeated Mere Savu in the final of the Ladies Darts National Singles at Defence Club yesterday to be crowned the new champion of the prestigious annual event.

In a close tussle, Elliot of FINTEL club overcame defending champions Savu of Traps 4-3 to claim the JAD International Travel Services-sponsored event.

The Bank of South Pacific employee defeated Fiji Darts Association president Nyla Alfred 3-1 while Savu overcame newcomer Bella Heritage 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Tournament controller Prem Chand said the final was closely contested and some superb throws saw Elliot prevail over the pre-tournament favourite.

A total of 24 participants took part in the day-long event, which included some big names in Savu, Alfred, Teresa Kaitu, Eleni Kit, Josie Crick, Reapi Blyde and Mereia Ram.

Chand was impressed with the level of competition displayed by the participants.

"The ongoing Vodafone Suva/Lami Darts League has kept these participants in form," Chand said.

"Many of these participants play in the Suva/Lami league and continuous competition help them improve on their skills."

Chand said some newcomers and former champions made a grand comeback but failed to find form in the latter stages of the competition.

Meanwhile, Evelyn Suran won the Bowl competition after beating Sovaia Bui 2-0.

Ana Ruci defeated Roxy Mandem 3-0 to win the Plate competition.
