THE Abdul Kalim-captained national lawn bowls side will be aiming to better its performance during the World Championship in Adelaide, Australia next month.
The national side will enter the event ranked ninth overall. The team will be ranked second in the triples after picking up the silver medal in New Zealand in 2008.
Fiji team manager Curtis Mar said the side, which has Semesa Naiseruvati, Samuela Tui, Arun Kumar and David Aitcheson, would hold practice sessions in Nadi this weekend. Mar said they had a busy international schedule with Kalim flying Fiji's flag at the World Singles Champion of Champions in Cyprus later this month.
"We have a few busy months ahead of us on the bowls international scene with Kalim representing Fiji at the World Singles Champion of Champions in Cyprus this month and the World Championships in Australia next month," Mar said.
"As part of our build-up to this World Championships, the players participated in the Asia Pacific Championship in Adelaide in 2011 and the Six Nations Championship in Adelaide this year.
"Fiji did very well in both events winning a gold medal and two bronze medals in the Asia Pacific Championship. We won a bronze medal in the Six Nations Championship.
"These events included the top three bowling nations in the world. It must also be noted that many of these countries that we compete against have players that play the sport professionally.
"We have a very balanced team which is not short of experience. Skipper for the triples and fours team Tui won the silver medal at the last World Championship. Together with Semesa they won a gold medal during the Asia Pacific Games and a bronze medal at the Six Nations event.
"Team Fiji's objective is to supersede the achievements of 2008. The national team will be practising at the Nadi Sports Club this weekend."
The World Singles Champion of Champions will be held from October 22-27.
The World Championship will be held from November 24 to December 9.
