THE High Court in Suva yesterday heard of an alleged breach of Occupational Health and Safety standards at the Suva Prison.
Peni Tui Laselase is jointly charged with Sitiveni Tuisamoa, Samuela Beeby and Ravuama Kedraika in a case before judge Justice Salesi Temo yesterday.
While submitting his bail application, Laselase said he hurt himself while bathing.
He said he believed it was an OHS breach, saying there were cracked tiles on the bathroom floor where he slipped and got hurt.
Justice Temo earlier adjourned the matter to October 17 for information and disclosures to be served by the State.
He said there were a lot of people applying for bail and told the accused to make his complaint known when the case was next called.
Laselase said he had another issue to raise and requested that he be taken to hospital for treatment.
Justice Temo asked the accused if he had reported the matter to the doctors at the prison.
Laselase said yes and alleged that they had come up with different excuses like the shortage of bandages and medication. Justice Temo told the accused that once he was remanded in custody, it became the responsibility of the Commissioner of Prisons to look after him.
He told the accused to report the matter to the visiting Justice, who visited the prison every two weeks or so.
Justice Temo told prison authorities to look into the medical problem and advised that Laselase be taken to hospital if the condition was serious.
