ENGLISH, Hindi and iTaukei should be the official languages of the Republic of the Fiji Islands.
And encouragement should be given to civil servants to learn to speak in the three major languages to help them in their field of work.
This was the view of retired civil servant Shiu Jatan in his submissions to the Constitution Commission at the Civic Centre building in Labasa yesterday.
"The Parliament of Fiji must accept English, Hindi and iTaukei as official languages.
"For civil servants, people should at least pass Form Seven level in order to be included in the public service," Mr Jatan said.
"The appointment of civil servants should be on probationary period for three years and if their performances are good, they should be contracted for another three years."
Mr Jatan said the minimum qualification requirement to join the police force should increased from Form Six to Form Seven or at least a degree level.
