Burnt cane rejection

THE Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) will not accept burnt sugarcane regardless of whether it is delivered within the required time frame.

FSC executive chairman Abdul Khan said cane burnt as a result of arson was no exception as well.

He said FSC was not obliged to receive and process any burnt cane. His comments follow concerns raised by a group of farmers in Vanua Levu on the continuous cases of burnt cane in the area at night.

"Burnt canes have been delivered to our mills throughout the country and recently, we have noted an increase in such cases," Mr Khan said.

He said the burnt sugarcane usually lost its sucrose content which was not fit for sugar production.

"Once harvested, burnt sugarcane loses its sucrose content very quickly resulting in virtually no sellable sugar production."
