INMATES have been warned there will be consequences if they are caught with contraband.
Speaking at the Lautoka Corrections Centre, Commissioner of Corrections Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said there had been an increase in the trafficking of contraband in various correctional centres. He said strict measures were adopted to curb the problem. Lt-Col Vasu said the number of family days had been reduced and only special categories of inmates were eligible to enjoy the privilege.
"Each inmate will be allowed a maximum of three visitors only," he said in a statement. "We have done all this so that we can reduce the number of trafficking items being brought inside."
Lt-Col Vasu said they would use mirrors during their strip searches, especially for inmates who have to attend court and those who were part of work parties outside the prison compound.
