All people born in Fiji should be called Fijians.
This was the view expressed by a Levuka Public Secondary School student Ashna Naidu in her submission to the Constitution Commission last Saturday.
Ms Naidu said all people who are born in Fiji are Fijians as Fiji was their home.
Speaking on behalf of her school she said every Fijian therefore deserved equal treatment and opportunities.
Ms Naidu also highlighted to the commission that scholarships for students should not be based on race and ethnicity.
"Newspapers usually carry advertisements saying scholarships for iTaukei students — this, is heartbreaking for the non iTaukei students," she said.
Ms Naidu said scholarships should be given on merit and to all students who met the set criteria.
"This will also encourage reconciliation."
She questioned why there were special scholarship provisions for Indians, Chinese and Rotumans and why there were multi-ethnic scholarships or the Public Service Commission scholarships for them and a different one for iTaukei students.
Ms Naidu said same education policies should apply to all Fijians.
