THE Jet Runners Club of Nadi has joined hands with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MOYS) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) to organise a fun run to mark World Health Day.
Club president Abinesh Kumar said the race tomorrow in Lautoka would be four kilometres long.
He said he was hopeful the fun run would become an annual event that will mark World Health Day every year.
“In recognition of the high rates of overweight and obesity among the People of Fiji, the three organisations’ (Club, MOH and MOYS) wish to emphasise the importance of physical activity in promoting a healthy lifestyle and reducing the risk of chronic diseases,” Kumar said.
“Taking part in physical activity, particularly runs, can contribute positively to social and emotional development, especially among youths and marginalised groups.
“We would like to encourage the public to come with their family and compete on Saturday (tomorrow) and live a healthy lifestyle.”
Kumar said medals would be up for grabs at the event and the first 50 people to cross the finishing line would receive special prizes.
“I am thankful to Shelley Thompson, the Healthy Lifestyles support officer western and youth officers in the Western Division who want to work together with the club for this fun run.
“With funding from the MOH we are able to host this event for the first time in Lautoka and we hope this becomes an annual event that can be enjoyed by the whole family,” Kumar said.
