THE overnight accommodation facility for female market vendors in Rakiraki is expected to be opened next month.

Rakiraki Town Council administrator Seini Raiko said the facility was part of two projects undertaken under the Partners Improving Markets project with United Nations Women.

Ms Raiko said the second project involved the UN Women’s International Day for Poverty Eradication which would be hosted by the Ba and Rakiraki town councils.

The council also plays host to the United Nations Development Programme Centre.

“Two national consultants have been hired by UNDP for two projects currently underway in the Rakiraki Municipal Market as part of its Millennium Markets Project.

“The first phase had been completed with the capacity development of the women vendors. The second phase includes the review of the Market Vendors Association constitution, the production of a Record Keeping template for the vendors and the establishment of the Market Learning Centre.”

Ms Raiko said the second phase involved the production of a Citizens Market Charter outlining the standard operating procedures for all the stakeholders in the market. Both these projects are expected to be completed in December 2012.
