CONSTITUTIONS direct a nation and its people, a group of women in Macuata were informed yesterday.

It determines the kind of country, the type of government, its citizens and their identity.

These were the words of Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni Taukei general secretary Adi Finau Tabakaucoro while addressing women at a Soqosoqo Vakamarama Caumatalevu meeting in Labasa yesterday.

“The constitution also determines the separate arms necessary for the running of the nation like the head of state, the legislature, parliament, the judiciary and justice and government departments,” Adi Finau said.

“It is also the supreme and highest law of the land.”

Her visit was a platform to prepare women of Caumatalevu with their submissions prior to the arrival of the Constitution Commission next week.

Adi Finau said it was imperative for women to voice their submissions to the commission because it would help in shaping the new constitution.

“Before presenting our submissions, we should at least understand what a constitution is because it will help us to create another new one for our country,” she said.

“It’s important to voice our opinions and suggestions through our own submissions because it will result in a good constitution that will look after the nation and its people well.”
