Patel stars in title defence

RUKESH Patel starred for the FMF/Superfoods-sponsored University of Fiji team during the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA) inter-tertiary games in Suva last week.

Patel, the team captain, top scored in both matches against the Fiji National University.

In the first match, University of Fiji won the toss and elected to bat first. Patel was the top performer with the bat scoring 57 runs as his side amassed 108 runs for the loss of three wickets in ten overs.

In reply, FNU eventually scored 58 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allocated 10 overs. Benjamin scored 17 runs for FNU.

In the second match, University of Fiji again won the toss and batted first to score 99 runs for the loss of three wickets. Patel smashed an unbeaten 70 runs. In reply, FNU could only manage 66 runs. Shakil Ahmed was the top scorer for FNU with 22.

"It feels awesome to defend our title with a 2-0 sweep" said Patel.

"We are grateful to Cricket Fiji for providing all the support that was needed to make this tournament successful"

FUSA Cricket co-ordinator Parneet Harish said the standard shown by the players of both teams were high. He said the sport had a bright future in the country.

University of Fiji cricket manager Shivneel Gounder also paid tribute to all the well-wishers and supporters of his side.
