THEY were dressed as Batman, Spiderman, queens, fairies, bears, princesses, nurses and lions as part of the school book drive yesterday.
Students of YMCA Child Care and Pre-School in Suva yesterday showcased through their costumes a character of their choice.
It also marks the Pre-School Week with the theme — Bridging the Gap in Early Childhood Education.
YMCA Pre-School co-ordinator Maria Logavatu said this was one of the most important parts of their school calendar as final year students gave books to their classmates as parting gifts as they prepared for Class One.
"This is like a tradition where we also update our bookshelves for those who will remain and the ones joining us next year," Mrs Logavatu said. "We need to instil in our young children the importance of reading."
She said when children learnt to read at a young age, they would survive in the long run because of the modern society they lived in. For final year students, Mrs Logavatu said they needed to prepare themselves mentally by learning to read as many books as they could.
"We also encouraged parents to spend some time reading books to their children as it would help them a lot in the classrooms," she said.
