THE Fiji Premium Vanua Levu Golf Championship started on a high note yesterday in Labasa with more than 40 players turning up from around the country.
Organising committee secretary Dinesh Goundar said the first day was a success with all players completing the 18 holes at the Labasa Golf Course.
Labasa golfer Janendra Prasad leads the field at the end of the first day on 77, followed by Atish Chand on 81.
Goundar said the annual tournament had been a success attracting golfers from around the country.
"The response has been overwhelming and we are having golfers coming in from the Fiji Golf Club to join us and it's encouraging to see this local tournament growing.
"It is the second year of the tournament and our sponsors, Fiji Premium, has also been wonderful in helping us make this tournament a success," Goundar said.
He added that the tournament is part of the calender of events under the banner of the National Golf Association of Fiji.
Goundar said they expected the tournament to end well today despite the hot Babasiga sun that visitors were trying to get used to.
