Suva to bow out in style

THE Suva soccer side wants to end the National Football League (NFL) on a high with a win over Labasa today at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

The capital city side is placed second on the Fiji Sun/ GP Batteries-sponsored competition and team coach Gurjeet Singh said he wanted it to remain that way.

Suva had the chance to win the competition last weekend but lost to Ba 0-4 at Govind Park to hand the Men in Black their 18th league title.

Singh said his team had prepared better compared to that loss and would use today's game as a build-up to the Courts Inter-District Championship (IDC).

He said his boys would need to play a different game compared to their loss to Ba if they wanted to defeat Labasa.

"Last week we could not prepare well because of the rain but this week we have had good weather and the preparation for the game against Labasa was better compared to last week," Singh said.

"This is an important game for us because we want to maintain our second place standing on the NFL and to prepare for the IDC," he said.

He said since top choice goalkeeper and captain Emori Ragata was ruled out of the match due to injury, his team would need to concentrate more on defence and try and score goals in the match.

Singh has also asked Suva fans to flock to Ratu Cakobau Park in numbers to cheer for and to motivate their team.

"We have seen in the past few games that very little supporters show up to games and since this is our last game in the Southern zone close to home, I would like to urge supporters to come and cheer us.

"Because the IDC is in the western division (Ba) please come here and cheer for us when we are still close to home because maybe some of you may not be able to come to the West."

He also asked his players to perform to the best of their abilities to prove their selection for the IDC.

"If you do not perform up to expectations chances are you may be benched in the IDC so please give it your very best on the field tomorrow (today)," Singh said.

The match kicks off at 3pm.
