A cohesive approach by the military and police resulted in the capture of four of the five inmates — who escaped from the Naboro minimum facility on Monday — at Uduya Point outside Lami Town last night.

Police Force acting chief of operations Senior Superintendent Rusiate Tudravu told The Fiji Times the four escapees were arrested on an island just off the Uduya Point.

"The four arrested are Epeli Qaraniqio, Tevita Sugu, Josaia Usumaki and Solomoni Qurai." SSP Tuidravu said.

He said still on the run was Isoa Waqa.

"The four were arrested in one location and are in police custody."

SSP Tudrau would not confirm whether guns were fired during the raid.

He added investigations are continuing with regards to the fifth escapee who is still on the run. At Uduya Point last night, security was tight and ambulances were parked nearby as the search continued for the fifth escapee.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces chief of staff Brigadier General Mohammed Aziz had said the hunt of the five escapees had become an issue of national concern.

"Finer details can not be released because investigations are continuing and we don't want media reports to affect the investigations," Brig-Gen Aziz said.
