They started as a small grocery and liquor store in 1985 in Nadi. A family business established by couple Suresh and Shakuntla Prasad. As business grew, so did customer’s demand which led the family to expand their store into one of the country’s leading shopping heavens 13 years later, the Consumer Supermarket Limited.
The Prasad family joined hands to handle the business and through hard work, opening until late hours of the night, the new Consumers Supermarket was born. Consumers Supermarket accountant, Mohammed Faizal Khan said both directors had good business work experience and a sound business accounting education to manage the business well. Close family members namely Rajesh Prasad and Aruna Prasad also helped in the operation of the business. Today, the supermarket is known as one of the best, recognised for their good customer services and cheap prices.
Mr Khan said once the supermarket was established because business was growing, the directors decided to expand as the list of customers was also increasing by the day.
“It was difficult to manage with a small store so commercial lots were purchased next door where the construction of the supermarket started. The much awaited new supermarket provided a larger floor space with numerous divisions, general merchants with a wide range of food items and non food items, cosmetics, hardware, liquor, refreshments, milk bar & takeaways, fruits & vegetables, butchery & meat slicing and more.”
Mr Khan said through the relationship that bonded with the customers, directors decided to name it Consumers Supermarket Limited, because it was a community supermarket with majority of the customers being from the business sector, namely Airports Fiji Limited, Air Terminal Services, Civil Aviaition of Authority Fiji Limited and many more.
