A 38-YEAR-OLD man who impregnated his daughter was found guilty of four counts of rape by the High Court in Labasa.

The farmer appeared before Judge Justice Salesi Temo on Wednesday.

The court heard that the farmer had intercourse with his daughter on four occasions on an island in Vanua Levu when she was only 12 years old in 2010.

The mother suspected the girl was pregnant and when she asked her, the girl cried and informed her about the incident.

The girl was taken to the nearby hospital where she learned that she was 14 weeks pregnant.

The doctor then, reported the matter to police.

In reading the summary of facts, Justice Temo said the girl was returning home from school when her father undressed and had sex with her in bed while her mother was out fishing.

On the other occasions, the girl was alone at home and carrying out household chores when her father repeated the unlawful act.

Justice Temo said the girl did whatever her father told her because she was scared to inform anyone about the matter.

The father of the girl did not object.

When asked why he had committed the offence, he told the court that his wife had extra marital affairs.

In mitigation, he said he was a first offender, married with four children between the ages of 7 to 14, farmer by profession and the sole breadwinner.

The case will be called in today for sentencing.
